Joker (2019) is set in 1981, following Arthur Fleck, a struggling party clown and aspiring comedian living with his mother, Penny, in Gotham City. The city is drowning in unemployment, corruption and rising crime. Arthur suffers from a disorder that causes uncontrollable laughter, and he relies on government-funded social services for medication and therapy.
